Empowering Girls through education
Foosteer Initiative is an indigenous non-profit organization that tackles poverty and inequality by supporting girls to go to school and succeed, and empowering young women to step up as leaders of change.
Foostee Initiative invests in girls and women in the poorest rural communities in Nigeria, where girls face acute disadvantage, and where their empowerment is now transforming communities.
Since 2015, Foosteer Initiative’s innovative education programs in Ajaokuta, and Lokoja communities of Kogi State have directly supported over 1500 students to attend primary and secondary school, and over 3000 children have benefited from improved learning environments.
Foosteer Initiative believes that every child is entitled to a quality education in a safe environment and a life as an independent young adult. Foosteer Initiative directly supports girls because they are the first to drop out of school, and the first to be failed by the system, facing the perils of early marriage, early pregnancy and HIV/AIDS.

2017 WHD campaign: #NotATarget
TODAY 19TH AUGUST IS WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY
Around the world, conflict is
exacting a massive toll on people’s lives. Trapped in wars that are not of
their making, millions of civilians are forced to hide or run for their lives.
Children are taken out of school, families are displaced from their homes, and
communities are torn apart, while the world is not doing enough to stop their
suffering. At the same time, health and aid workers – who risk their lives to
care for people affected by violence – are increasingly being targeted.
Nigeria currently has the Highest Number of
Out-of-School Children in the World, it is sad to note that 10.5 million
children are out of school in Nigeria. Of
the 10.5 million children out of school, 60% are from the northern region of
the country, where education and safety are threatened by the
Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.
The effect of
boko-haram insurgency and incessant communal clashes have
impacted negatively in so many communities. So many youths who lost their means
of livelihood and are to start afresh are frustrated, children are out of
school roaming about aimlessly on the street, anger and fear is high. This
have stifled human resource development as education system upon which
development trends depend was nearly brought to halt following torching of
schools and displacement of teaching personnel.
Building a culture of peace at grassroots levels is Key. A
society where 70-80% of its citizenry are literate, can avoid unnecessary chaos
and unrest, thus bringing positive development to their lives and that of their
societies.
For WHD 2017, humanitarian partners
are coming together to reaffirm that civilians caught in conflict are
#NotATarget.
